Creative Places Tuam Artist Bursary

Creative Places Tuam Artist Bursary: Community Solidarity through Collaborative Practices

Creative Places Tuam is seeking applications from artists connected to the Tuam area whose collaborative socially engaged practice has been disrupted due to the COVID 19 restrictions.

Collaborative practice is relational. The work develops because of direct and often durational encounters between artists and communities of interest and place.

We recognise the challenge posed to artists continuing collaborative projects in a time of physical distancing and the urgent demands on community development and civil society organisations to focus on immediate service provision. We are therefore offering artists connected to the Tuam area who engage in collaborative socially engaged or place based practice an opportunity to take time to recalibrate their work.  To explore and test meaningful ways to continue to connect and collaborate with their communities of interest and place.

Deadline: 5.00pm, Wednesday 3rd June 2020

The purpose of this bursary is to support and nurture professional artists’ practice within the Tuam town and hinterland area that has been disrupted during this time of crisis. It is specifically aimed at an artist who has a track record of working collaboratively with communities of place or interest. The bursary will provide the selected artist with time and resources to carry out research and to reflect on their practice. More particularly, the bursary allows the artist to consider key questions associated with their practice using collaborative methodologies. We aim to offer the artist:

  • Time to reflect and reconfigure their practice in relation to the current COVID 19 restrictions.
  • Time to consider digital and virtual space as a valid and essential arena for collaborative artistic endeavour.
  • Time to think on how their practice will emerge from this time of physical distancing and restriction
  • Time to reach out and connect to vital collaborators, networks, peers and other socially engaged artists, academics, community leaders etc. to develop a discourse on their practice during this time.
  • Time to work in collaboration with Creative Places Tuam to imagine how the community will emerge from this time of crisis.

It is expected that the recipient of this award share the learning arising from the bursary with the Creative Places Tuam Programme and the local community.

In recognition of the severe limitations in place due to physical distancing and the challenges this poses to artists and their practice we are offering 3 awards of €3,000 each to support the creation of methodologies of practice, reflective ways of thinking and creative means of communication with communities.  We envision the duration of this bursary to be between 3 and 6 months.  The Creative Places Tuam Artist Bursary is open to all artforms.

To arrange a one to one meeting about this bursary or for any further information on the programme please email Carolann, Creative Places Tuam Coordinator on creativeplacestuam[at]create-ireland.ie or call 085 1437774.
