SALMAGUNDI feature film

SALMAGUNDI is a collaborative film project commissioned by Hugh Lane Gallery and Create and awarded to film-maker Jijo Sebastian in 2023. The aim of the project was two-fold: to bring a culturally diverse group of people together to make a feature-length collaborative film and, through this process, to create a transcultural community which would outlive the film and go on to engage in other creative endeavours.

Comprising six interwoven stories, the film reflects themes and issues central to the participants’ lived experience, celebrating a collective voice that underscores the power of community across cultures.

This film shares the process behind the work, as the artist and community members explored and learned together over an 18 month period.

National Networking Day 2023

Video

Create National Networking Day 2023 took the theme Collaborating on Climate Justice.

Our programme of guest speakers included the Climate Justice team from TASC, the think tank for action on social change, experienced environmental campaigner and journalist John Gibbons, Dr Cathy Fitzgerald, an accredited sustainability educator, and an experenced panel of socially-engaged artists including AlanJames Burns, Sheila Flanagan and Rita Marcalo, chaired by Ala Buisir, visual artist, journalist and co-founder of Gorm Media. These presentations, and a workshop facilitated by TASC, stimulated discussion amongst those present , providing a basis for developing future work in this area.

Pablo Helguera: The Social Practice Nightmare Before Christmas

We were thrilled to welcome Pablo Helguera, a New York-based Mexican artist working with installation, sculpture, photography, drawing, socially engaged art and performance, as our keynote speaker for our Networking Event in November 2022. As both an artist and educator Pablo has made a very significant contribution to the field of socially engaged practice. Through his projects and critical writing, he has expanded our thinking of what it means to be a socially engaged artist, and the potential of the practice to effect change. Following his keynote lecture, Pablo was joined in conversation by artist Deirdre O’Mahony, member of Create’s Board.

Representation and Reimagining Traveller Culture: Networking Event 2022

This panel, part of our Networking Event in November 2022, was chaired by artist Seamus Nolan and featured Kathleen Keenan (musician), Mary McDonagh (theatre artist) and Nora Corcoran (Galway Traveller movement, Misleor festival), on Representation and (Re)imagining Traveller culture at local, regional and national levels. Via various artforms the panel discuss the importance of the community taking the lead in developing, directing and producing the experiences and histories of the Traveller community.

Colour of my Breath at Networking Event 2022

We were delighted to feature the premiere of The Colour of My Breath, a filmic exploration of the particular challenges of integration from the perspective of collaborative/ community artists from minority ethnic or migrant backgrounds at our Networking Event in November 2022. The premiere was followed by a panel discussion with artist Tomasz Madajczak, Alessandra Azevedo, Amir Abu Alrob and Mark Sebata, with lead artist Jijo Sebastian, chaired by Carlos Garrido Castellano.

Colour of My Breath is supported by the Communities Integration Fund from the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth. This project is also supported by Create, the national development agency for collaborative arts and the Arts Council’s Artist in the Community Scheme.

In this conversation, Nadia and her mentor Kate O’Shea discuss aspects of the residency and its impact on her practice.

This residency was funded through the Arts Council of Ireland’s Artist in the Community Scheme, which is managed by Create. It was supported by Sligo Arts Office and is offered through a partnership between Create and The Model.

Networks of Solidarity: 04 On The Airwaves

Networks of Solidarity is a series of four monthly online talks co-organised by artist/organiser Kate O’Shea and writer/researcher Enya Moore from the Just City Collective, which aims to strengthen transnational networks of solidarity and deepen awareness of place-based struggles that reverberate from Dublin 8 to Gadigal Country (Sydney, Australia). This event series is supported in part by a Dublin City Council Revenue award granted to Create.
