SIRIUS and Create Artist Residency Award 2022

News, Opportunities

published

Following on from our successful 2020 Artist in the Community Scheme Cultural Diversity Residency partnership, SIRIUS in Cobh, Co. Cork and Create are delighted to once again offer a Residency opportunity for a collaborative / socially engaged artist. We specifically invite expressions of interest from artists who are committed to developing or consolidating their collaborative / socially engaged practice. SIRIUS and Create are committed to supporting the selected artists’ interests as well as practices that either directly address the connection between art and activism, or broadly contribute to a discussion around commoning, locality, the public sphere and civic action.

In keeping with both SIRIUS and Create’s commitment to principles of equality, diversity and inclusion, we particularly welcome expressions of interest from artists from minority ethnic backgrounds and / or who have lived experience of displacement and / or are shaped by histories of intergenerational migration. Candidates may self-identify as Traveller, Roma, refugee, migrant or otherwise through lived experience and/or second generational memories.

The Residency takes place at SIRIUS between 22 September and 18 October. The award offers accommodation for one artist at SIRIUS for this period. The Residency provides opportunities for professional development, exchange, networking, and learning, with additional curatorial advice from SIRIUS. The selected artist is supported with time and the opportunity to work with both SIRIUS and Create to explore areas of their practice in an environment of rigorous discussion and critical feedback.

Artists must be based in the Republic of Ireland and be willing to be resident in SIRIUS from 22 September to 18 October to be eligible for this award. Expressions of Interest (see guidelines document) must be received by 1st July 2022.

About the award

  • The Residency supports the selected artist to develop and/or consolidate their collaborative / socially engaged practice.
  • The Residency is a research opportunity, not for production; thus, it is open and experimental without the added pressure or focus on project delivery.
  • The award supports the selected artist in exploring the wider field of collaborative / socially engaged arts.
  • The award supports the selected artist to connect with other artists based in Cork City and Cobh to foster dialogue.
  • Applications from artists working across all artforms are welcome.

What the award offers

Accommodation

The award offers accommodation for one artist at SIRIUS. As a residential provider, accommodation is a key part of the award and taking this element up is both a condition and a major advantage. Partner and/or children of the selected artist are welcome and can be accommodated.

Facilities

The apartment is located at SIRIUS and is fully equipped. It has capacity for desk-based work but does not enable larger, more studio-based making.

Stipend

The award offers a stipend of €1,200 and per diem of €920 that covers agreed expenses related to travel and subsistence.

The successful applicant will meet with both SIRIUS and Create to discuss how the opportunity can be best tailored to their work and needs vis a vis facilities, accessibility, and logistics in terms of travel, accommodation and subsistence.

Submitting an expression of interest

See Guidelines for SIRIUS/Create Artist Residency Awards 2022, here. The deadline for Expressions of Interest is the 1st July 2022.
