Create and Sirius Arts Centre Artist Residency Award Open Call

News, Opportunities

Create and Sirius Arts Centre invite expressions of interest from collaborative artists with a minority ethnic background, and more broadly from a migrant background, for a residency award at Sirius Arts Centre in Cobh, Co. Cork.

The residency takes place across both Sirius Arts Centre and The Guesthouse Project in Cork city and provides opportunities for research, exchange, networking, and learning, with additional curatorial advice from Sirius Arts Centre. The residency runs for four weeks, between 2 and 27 September 2020. Expressions of Interest should be submitted by the 20th July 2020. See Guidelines document for further information on the application process.

The residency is funded through the Arts Council of Ireland’s Artist in the Community Scheme, which is managed by Create, and is offered through a partnership between Create and Sirius Arts Centre. It aims to support artists from minority ethnic and migrant backgrounds to develop their collaborative and socially engaged arts practice. Artists must be based in the Republic of Ireland, to be eligible for this opportunity.

Please be aware that, at all times, Create and its partners are following public health guidelines to protect their staff and the artists, organisations and communities we serve. As the situation regarding Covid 19 and working practices evolves, this may mean changes to our planned work. Any changes will be circulated through our website and social media.

About the award

This award seeks to support cultural diversity in collaborative and socially engaged artistic practice in Ireland. We welcome applications from artists working across all artforms.*

It aims to:

  • provide a platform for the selected artist to develop and/or consolidate their collaborative arts practice
  • support the selected artist to network and engage with the wider field of socially engaged arts

*See guidelines for definition of artforms.

What the award offers

The award offers accommodation for one person at Sirius Arts Centre and The Guesthouse Project. As a residential provider, accommodation is a key part of the award and taking this element up is both a condition and a major advantage. Each organisation has its own apartment, with partial shared facilities. The awardee will reside at Sirius Arts Centre for the induction week and the remainder period at The Guesthouse Project, which is located in the historic Shandon district of Cork and within walking distance from the city centre.

The apartments do not enable making but have capacity for desk-based work. Thus, it is important to understand that this is a learning and research opportunity and not a residency for production. The residency allows the awardee to connect with other practitioners in Cork city and Cobh to foster dialogue and experimentation.

The award also offers a stipend and covers agreed expenses related to travel and subsistence.

Submitting an expression of interest

Expressions of Interest are due by the 20th July 2020. See Guidelines for Create/Sirius Arts Centre Artist Residency Awards 2020.
