Arts Council AIC Scheme Bursary Award 2018: Collaborative Arts in Health Contexts – recipient

Create is delighted to announce that Marielle MacLeman has been awarded the Arts Council Artist in the Community Scheme Bursary Award 2018: Collaborative Arts in Health Contexts

MacLeman is a visual artist who has developed an Arts and Health practice since the early 2000s. Her practice explores the interconnection between place and the human drive to invent, collect, and understand.

Using this bursary, MacLeman intends to research and explore notions of place and place-making in the acute hospital setting through research, reflective writing, and by engaging the hospital community in experiential workshops and discussion. She will critically reflect, in collaboration with peers and participants, on collaborative methodologies in the context of a patient-centred healthcare setting, and expectations around individual health and wellbeing. MacLeman will also undertake a residency at West Cork Arts Centre with Arts and Health peers during May and June 2019. MacLeman intends to share the learning arising from the Bursary with the wider arts and health community and collaborative arts sector.

The Arts Council Artist in the Community Scheme Bursary Award 2018: Collaborative Arts in Health Contexts aims to support individual professional artists in any art-form working collaboratively in the field of Arts and Health.

The purpose of the Bursary Award is to support and nurture professional arts practice and it is specifically aimed at an artist who has a track record of working collaboratively with communities of place or interest. The Bursary Award of €10,000 provides the selected artist with time and resources to carry out research and to reflect on practice. More particularly, the Bursary allows the artist to consider key questions associated with arts and health practice using collaborative methodologies.

The panel which awarded this bursary consisted of Kath Gorman, Arts Participation Adviser, Arts Council, Ruth McGowan, Director at Dublin Fringe Festival, Cathy Coughlan, Artist and Dance-Theatre Maker (Past AIC Bursary Awardee for Collaborative Arts and Dance), with Create staff members Léa Blanchard and Jane O’Rourke minute taking and observing.
