Uisce Salach World Premiere
Event · Performance
Create is delighted to announce the world premier of Uisce Salach (Dirty Water) a unique sound composition sonifying and vocalising the River Liffey, which takes place on the 27th of November at 7pm. This composition, led by Softday, was created by computer software programmes, with water samples supplied by scientists, citizen scientists and environmentalists. The work will be performed live by the Irish Chamber Orchestra in combination with the “Softday Citizen Scientist Ensemble”, a public laptop orchestra, the Uisce Salach Choir and guests. A new choral composition ‘If I fall in the Liffey” will be performed by the Uisce Salach Choir. Special guests include Declan Byrne and John Walsh from the Dublin Dockworkers Preservation Society and award winning sound artist La Cosa Preziosa.
Softday, an award winning collaborative team, engages with issues relating to climate change and its global effects, through sonifications, multimedia artworks and public performances. Softday uses various media and creative genres to create art works that speak of the urgent need for social action.
Uisce Salach (Dirty Water) is a collaborative sound art project about water issues in Ireland, which enabled citizens living and working along the River Liffey to participate in scientific research with creative outcomes. Working with those residents, schools, community organisations, fishing clubs along the river and workers in Dublin Port, the project synergised science and arts practice using water sampling and creative technology, developing new thinking and new meaning around the sustainability of water resources.
This project is facilitated by Dublin Port’s Port Perspectives Engagement and Education Programme and is supported by Create. Uisce Salach (Dirty Water) is suported by an Arts Council Arts Participation Project Award 2019.
