Community Development, Collaborative Arts Practice & Activism Talk Series

We are delighted to work with Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council Arts Office , curating the ‘Intersections of Community Development, Collaborative Arts Practice and Activism’ talk series. This series aims to introduce the cross over between socially engaged art, community development and activism. We look to create a casual and safe space for interaction and exchange. All are welcome to this talk and tea and coffee will be provided.

In this the first of the series we explore Youth and Place-based Practice with artists Aaron Sunderland Carey and Helen Flanagan.

About the artists

Helen Flanagan is an artist with a socially engaged practice involving film, broadcasting and the production of social spaces. In her practice she is motivated by the perspective that all people, including children and young people, should be able to live comfortably and be supported to participate fully in society, access the arts and live in a world where nature can prosper. She is the lead artist on Inchicore Children’s Broadcasting, a project which invites children in Dublin 8 to reimagine broadcasting as a multi-layered communication and creative tool, and she is an organiser/artist in Friends of Ardee Bog, a peatlands community group based in Louth working to protect a local bog.

Aaron Sunderland Carey is a socially engaged visual arts practitioner based in Dublin. Carey graduated NCAD with a degree in Fine Art Media and since has been working as an artist across the city. Carey’s work is concerned with the lived experiences of working-class people in Dublin, dealing with themes of masculinity, class struggle, marginalisation, urban development and the many other factors that stem from life in these areas.
