AIC Scheme 2024 Round One: Successful Recipients

Congratulations to all successful applicants to the AIC Scheme (Round One) in 2024, who come from a range of art forms and contexts.

Research and Development

Aaron Sunderland Carey will work with Axis Ballymun and Poppintree Youth Project to undertake an immersive exploration of Ballymun’s rich history and evolving landscape through the lens of socially engaged art, with an overarching objective to unravel the complex narrative of Ballymun as a dynamic entity shaped by both its physical environment and its people.

Alisha Doody will engage with Aisteach – Queer Housing Co-Op, employing a series of entrustment exercises, collaborative writing, and research meetings to explore the alternative housing needs of LGBTQI+ people with a view to public engagement through a collaborative arts project at a later date.

Billy Lingwood will work with members of the Gay Community in Cork, a key objective of which is to initiate a constructive conversation at Cork’s Gay Project about the value of collaborative arts practices to communities.

Mark Durkan and the Parks Department of Kildare County Council will collaborate to explore place-making and identity in relation to Woodstock Castle and its surrounding residential communities in Athy, Co. Kildare.

Sean Taylor will work with Search And Rescue Dogs Association Ireland (SARDA) to collectively research and develop ideas, potential and possible ways to create a future new collaborative art project and work, which conceptually explores the voluntary search and rescue work of SARDA.

Research and Development with Mentoring

Amy Redmond will work with the Fatima Groups United Drama Group, to explore storytelling and personal micro-stories, towards developing a performance piece and/or podcast. Amy will be mentored by Veronica Dyas.

Aoife Desmond and Coiste Forbatha Béal Átha’n Ghaorthaidh and Cumann Staire Uíbh Laoire will work together to establish community relationships and a collaborative process at the source of the River Lee. This initial engagement will potentially form the basis for co-created site specific documentary film and performance works. Aoife will receive mentorship by Ruairí Donovan.

Bobby Byrne will engage with REACH, People with an upper limb difference, building a community around upper limb difference where people with the condition can explore some of the common experiences they share and engage with them physically through dance. Bobby will be mentored by Cathy Coughlan.

Cathy Foley, Kate Irving, Alex Kornhuber, and Western Alzheimer’s will develop a methodology and framework for telling the stories of people living with dementia, alongside their care partners and families. The collaborators will be mentored by Marie Brett.

Ceara Conway will engage with the Cape Clear Community to research and develop ideas for new songs in English and Irish, to form an ensemble with an interest in performing these new songs, and research sites/visuals for potential performance. Ceara will receive mentorship by Seán Doherty.

Holly Mullarkey and the Tuam Mother and Baby Home Alliance will collaborate on building bridges through collaborative art methodologies between Tuam Home survivors and people in Tuam. Holly will be mentored by Veronica Dyas.

Michelle Boyle and Virginia Town Team aim to explore a locally-led creative concept for Lough Ramor through information sharing and community collaboration, to draw attention to and celebrate Cavan’s water rich heritage. Michelle will receive mentorship by Donna Cooney.

Philip Ryan will work with Glenbower Wood and Lake Committee in collaboratively creating a rejuvenated collective vision for the future of the community owned Glenbower Wood through a socially engaged art process. Philip will be mentored by Seán Taylor.

Project Realisation

Durrow Development Forum will work with artist Annie Holland on “Our Golden Legacy” – Creatively commemorating 100 years of agricultural relics in Co. Laois, a creative fusion of video & audio recordings with 10 local elderly participants (aged between 80-100yrs old) focusing on memories evoked by rural artifacts in Aylward’s Rural Museum Co Laois. These recordings will also inspire a variety of creative responses: text, sketches, old photography which will then be digitally printed on old ceramic ware.

Floating World Productions/ The Elders and artist Andrea Scott will collaborate on Characters at my Table: The Mostly Imagined, Partly Historical Tale of the Underrated Irish Playwright Teresa Deevey, a play imagining the life of an intriguing figure who wrote for theatre + radio though profoundly deaf. Through the collaborative process, they will address both the overlooking of Deevey, perhaps due to her gender and disability, as well as the visibility and value of older adults in the community.

St Michael’s House – Work Options and artist David O’Neill, through POV – A Hybrid Storytelling Project, will use sound making, music recording techniques, and accessible story telling strategies to create multi-sensory artworks. Weekly collaborative recording activities and site visits will result in create hybrid stories that utilize environmental and traditional instruments, combining text and audio, and will be exhibited at Axis, Ballymum.
