Learning Development: Arts and Health

Arts and health is an important area of contemporary collaborative arts practice which takes place in a wide variety of healthcare settings.

Create is committed to the development of arts in healthcare initiatives and has supported both artists and organizations in a variety of ways, including the facilitation of the network of arts co-ordinators in hospitals, and by actively encouraging the sharing of learning in relation to arts in healthcare settings (see below).

Isn't every heart sacred - paul maye Arts Council Vital Signs | Arts & Health in Context
October 14–21, 2009, Dublin

Vital Signs is a programme of arts and health events that took place in Dublin in October 2009. It included a conference in the Royal College of Physicians (October 15), a national exhibition in five venues in Dublin 8 (October 14 - 21), and a series of opinion pieces about arts and health practice. Vital Signs is an Arts Council initiative, developed and delivered in association with Create.

Arts and Health Policy Working Group

Sarah Tuck, director Create, is on the Arts Council Arts and Health - Policy and Strategy Working Group led by Ann O Connor, Arts and Health Advisor, Arts Council. Other members include Denis Roche, Helene Hugel; Lucina Russell; Margaret Flannery; Margaret Feeney; Deirdre Walsh; Mary Grehan; Justine Foster.

Professional Development Course for Artists Working in Healthcare Settings

The course ran from September 6 to October 31, 2008. This course programme was designed by Create, The Adelaide and Meath Hospital, incorporating the National Children's Hospital, Dublin, and the Institute of Art, Design and Technology – IADT. It was directly funded by the Arts Council. The course was developed for artists, across all art form disciplines, who planned to work in healthcare settings. The successful applicants to the course were: Jenny Walsh-Bassett (radio drama); Jennie Moran (visual arts) ; Sharon Barker (visual arts); Deirdre O’Neill (dance); Tricia McCarthy (visual arts); Anne Walsh (visual arts); Sarah Ruttle (visual arts); Mary O’Brien (literature); Roisin Ni Maoilearca (curator); Kathy Marsh (visual arts) ;Sarah Fuller (visual arts); Dawn Freeborn (visual arts); Sally-Anne Duffy (film); Emily Boylan (visual arts). READ MORE [PDF].
