About the Learning Development Programme

Create values and promotes the development of new ways of learning in regard to collaborative practice in social and community contexts. The new generation of emerging artists working in different social contexts have often few supports in examining questions of who is making arts, who they are making it for and how it is being made. Conventional ideas of training cannot necessarily respond to the developmental needs and status of this ever evolving sector in isolation. Create encourages, supports and fosters initiatives around learning to expand and challenge the thinking about ideas, processes and practices in the collaborative arts arena, as well as what constitutes a ‘community’.

Working in partnership with a number of arts organisations and educational institutions, Create provides experiential learning opportunities for artists looking to develop the skills to work collaboratively with communities of place and/or interest.

Learning Development Programme

Introduction for student artists (DOC)

The Learning Development Programme is a yearly programme initiative. It is an experiential learning programme for student artists engaging in socially engage collaborative practice.

The National College of Art and Design in Thomas St, Dublin initiated the Public Art Placement programme in 2002 in collaboration with Create. The impetus behind the initiative began with the provocation - what happens when fine arts students collaborate with communities to produce an artwork?

Since then the programme has evolved year upon year becoming the Learning Development Programme - a unique initiative between NCAD, IADT Dun Laoghaire and the Tisch School of the Arts (New York University) and The LAB.

Students artists identify organisations, groups and communities who they propose to engage with through the programme. Create support the introductions and seeding of the resulting collaborative relationships.

In January of each year student artists are part of an intensive artist led training programme to introduce them to various methodologies, approaches, processes and practice in the area. They also meet artists who are renowned within the sector and who provide examples of best practice in both short and long term projects. The training programme is curated and programmed by Create.

Over an eight to ten week period the student artists engage with groups/communities who they have begun a working collaborative relationship with. During this time Create provide ongoing support as well as programme a weekly training for the student artists. Create are committed to interrogating examples of best practice both nationally and internationally and exposing the student artists to this work. Allowing the work to act as a catalyst for innovative thought and thinking that may be influential for the student artists during this experiential programme.

Each year  Create  invites  an international artist to interject in the middle of this period of the programme to work directly with the student artists. This happens at a midway point when student artists are in the process of a number of varying considerations concerning their work, their engagement with the group and the outcome of the collaboration. To date  international guest  artists  include  Peggy Shaw (USA),  Faisal Abdu' Allah (UK) Nic Green (UK) and Stacy Makishi (UK)
